Building a Barn using Barn Plans

Building a Barn using Barn Plans

Building a barn can be a lot of fun, especially if youve never done it before. There are many reasons for which you might choose to build a barn actually, though in the past they were typically used for the storage of animals and other farm supplies. Nowadays barn plans not only include storage for tools, but quite a bit more. More than a few people out there currently use their barn as a workshop, and that could include anything from welding, to woodworking, to iron working.

You will need to make sure you draw up the right barn plans before you actually dive in to the creation of your barn, and as you are doing so you will need to question whether you wish to use this barn for animal storage. You can actually build a dual-purpose barn if you so desire though it will take a bit more work.

A dual purpose barn plan essentially divides the barn into two sections with a partition. The animals live on one side and the other side is kept free for other uses like a workshop. A loft is another addition to consider. It is useful to hold food and bedding for the animals. Some people will choose to have their loft take up half of the barns usable space, and others will make it a bit smaller. If you wish to become even more creative, then you might try turning the loft into more of an attic and having hatch access.

Another aspect of good barn plans is the animals well-being, and this will most certainly involve ensuring that they can exit the barn when they need to. As with designing a chicken coop, your barn plans will need to include some type of attached yard, and that yard needs to be accessible to your animals at all times unless the weather conditions are not optimal.

Another important thing to consider is insulation, especially on the side of the barn designed for animals. The insulation should be placed between the studs and then covered with plywood. This ensures the animals will not end up eating it for dinner.  You want your animals and your barn to last as long as possible!

We covered a small set of the things you should think about before you build your barn. Its a huge undertaking and there are many possibilities. Just remember that it can be very difficult to change your plans in the middle of the build, so plan everything out ahead of time!
